Book Subscription Box Review: The Best Damn Book Box

The Best Damn Book Box: April Box ‘All That Glitters’

Okay, so if you don’t know what a book subscription box then;

  1. Where have you been?
  2. Check out my blog post about them HERE.

I actually ordered the May box but there was a mix up and I ended up receiving the April box (I’ll also be receiving the May box thankfully since I really wanted it!).  I’m not going to lie, this box is a bit dearer but the quality of the products seems really good. It was getting really dark when I was taking these photos so they aren’t as good as they could be, but I’m lazy so they’ll have to do. As always, where possible, I’ll include links for each of the bookish items.

So the first thing I saw in this box was this beautiful little print design post card inspired by the book of the month.  This was designed by Marquisdusileil and Etsy creator.

The next thing I found was this BEAUTIFUL bookmark, it’s honestly stunning.  I have however seen some people comment that it leaves glitter in books when used and as much as I love glitter I’m not too keen on having it IN my books. But still pretty, I think this was made exclusively for the box.  It says it’s by a creator called @thebestdamncraftshop which I think is the actual book subscription company.  But I can’t find much on them.

Next up we have this shiny candle, seriously, even the candle itself is glittery! It smells of ‘Romantic’ Amber, Vanilla and Jasmine.  I’m not usually one for ‘floral’ scents (they give me headaches) I really like how this one smells and so far I haven’t gotten a headache! This is by The Melting Library (Etsy) and while this specific candle isn’t on their Etsy store they have a bunch of other yummy candles so make sure you check them out!

This tote bag was also included in this month’s box and I really like this design, the art and the quote look so good against the black tote! It’s by BookwormBoutique from Society6. Again this specific product seems to be exclusively for The Best Damn Book Box but there are a bunch of other fun bookish items on their store so again, check them out!

Second to last we have some book related merchandise stuff, this cute little mirror (which I probably won’t use…) and this The Glittering Court temporary tattoo. Both were made for this box, presumably by the curators using imprint.com and purebuttons.com.

And lastly the book…

TheBestDamnBookBox#12

The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead. It’s a Historical YA Fantasy Romance by the author of The Vampire Academy series. And obviously it inspired the theme for April’s box ‘All That Glitters’.

Big and sweeping, spanning from the refined palaces of Osfrid to the gold dust and untamed forests of Adoria, The Glittering Court tells the story of Adelaide, an Osfridian countess who poses as her servant to escape an arranged marriage and start a new life in Adoria, the New World. But to do that, she must join the Glittering Court.

Both a school and a business venture, the Glittering Court is designed to transform impoverished girls into upper-class ladies who appear destined for powerful and wealthy marriages in the New World. Adelaide naturally excels in her training, and even makes a few friends: the fiery former laundress Tamsin and the beautiful Sirminican refugee Mira. She manages to keep her true identity hidden from all but one: the intriguing Cedric Thorn, son of the wealthy proprietor of the Glittering Court.

When Adelaide discovers that Cedric is hiding a dangerous secret of his own, together they hatch a scheme to make the best of Adelaide’s deception. Complications soon arise—first as they cross the treacherous seas from Osfrid to Adoria, and then when Adelaide catches the attention of a powerful governor.

But no complication will prove quite as daunting as the potent attraction simmering between Adelaide and Cedric. An attraction that, if acted on, would scandalize the Glittering Court and make them both outcasts in wild, vastly uncharted lands…

Final Thoughts:

This box was alright, it might have been because I received the FairyLoot box the same month or because they both had the same book, but I simply couldn’t help but compare the two.  I will be reviewing the May box ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (Review HERE) so if the comparing thing was the case it’ll be clearer and I’ll have a better review for it.  But as it stands I wasn’t all that impressed.  Having such an obvious theme title gave away the book so there wasn’t much surprise there unfortunately.  Again they had the same book as another book subscription box company and I feel like maybe they should communicate with one another to ensure they don’t all choose the same books each month.  I understand that most of them choose a new release so sometimes there isn’t many options but I’m sure there are many other people who order from more than one service and it can be a bit disappointing when you don’t get a ‘new’ book.  I really did love the candle and the bookmark, they were probably my two favorite items in the box. The mirror and the temporary tattoo just seemed a little, for lack of a better term, cheap.  Again that could be me comparing this box to FairyLoot which also had The Glittering Court temporary tattoos, but even so this one wasn’t all that exciting. While I love the design of the tote bag the material and size/width just aren’t suitable for my needs, and I honestly don’t have much use for the postcard since it doesn’t fit in my frames.  Maybe I could stick it on my bedroom door? The packaging of this box wasn’t anything exciting, I did like the slivers of gold metallic streamers but other than that it was a bit bland, and the font on the ‘What’s Inside/Welcome’ letter was really hard to read and not everything was clear (creators etc..).  Anyway, unfortunately I wasn’t too impressed with this box.  While the artwork and quality of some of the stuff was really good the expense of the box and shipping just didn’t seem worth it to be honest. I probably won’t order this box again unless it’s a theme I really like (such as ‘Beauty and the Beast’).  It just isn’t a good choice for me.  I have seen some of their past boxes and they seem to have a bit better content so it’ll be clearer to see if this box was just poorly curated when I receive (if, hopefully because there was a bit of a mix up..) the May box.
