Book Subscription Box Review: The Best Damn Book Box

The Best Damn Book Box: May Box ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Okay, so if you don’t know what a book subscription box then;

  1. Where have you been?
  2. Check out my blog post about them HERE.

So you may have noticed I already have a review up for The Best Damn Book Box, and if you’ve read it you know that I had actually ordered the May box and there was so confusion and I ended up getting both the April and May box.  That was fine, but if you’ve read it then you also know that I said I wouldn’t be ordering again.  Well since then there has been yet another kerfuffle and I’ve now ended up ordering the June/July (?) box, which is themed ‘Game of Thrones’ (a show/book series I do not like, so I’m not exactly looking forward to it at all.).  So it’s fair to say that not only am I not impressed with the curating of this box, the price (this has more to do with living in Australia and shipping than any fault of theirs), but also now this mess.  I am aware that I was sent messages telling me to skip the next renewal/cancel subscription but I honestly thought I had and since I didn’t receive  message telling me that that had been confirmed I simply assumed it had.  Apparently not.  Anyway, so I ordered this box because I love Beauty and the Beast.  It’s my favorite of the Disney movies and I just really love it, so of course I ordered it! Anyway, here’s my review.

Okay so the first thing in this box I saw was the introduction letter as well as a poster tied together as a little scroll.  As with the last introduction letter the font chosen was very hard to read however the company names/creator information was far more legible so at least I’ll be able to give you the details for each piece without any uncertainty.

The poster is pretty, it was created by @marquisdusoleil, an Etsy creator, exclusively for this box.  To be honest I would have preferred this Belle bookmark or Feyre bookmark by her instead, but whatever.

Next up we have this Black tea, which is Rose, Cinnamon and Vanilla flavoured by @firsteditionteaco, another Etsy creator, and while I’m sure it smells and tastes wonderful… I don’t drink tea.  And since it’s in  sealed package I won’t be opening it until I have a guest over who enjoys herbal tea.  I think this was a great product to put in a box like this so that’s a plus.

I then picked up this candle called Be Our Guest, which is scented of Cobbler, Vanilla Cupcakes and Tea.  It was made by (yet another Etsy creator) @inthewickoftime.  It does smell nice, and again this is well curted for this box.

This confused me a little bit… Since there’s no real relevance to a Key in either Beauty and the Beast or the book in this month’s box.  But it was created by @TheBestDamnCraftShop, which is basically the company that curates the box.  I don’t really know what I’m meant to do with it.. The letter says it’s to ‘unlock the enchanted castle of mystery’.  So whatever that means..?

Moving on we have this Cookie, it’s a white chocolate covered lemon cookie by @meechieskreations.  Again this is something I think it pretty appropriate for this box.  I’m taste testing it now. It smells really yummy, I kind of don’t want to eat it since I only have one and it’s hard to get nice things like this in Tasmania (unless it’s Tasmanian made).  Okay, so there’s a lot of white chocolate.  This is probably my sweet for the day..The lemon sort of reminds me of detergent… Which is alarming.  I mean it tastes sweet, but our dishwashing soap is lemon scented and yeah.. Anyway, it’s a good cookie I guess.

Next up we have a product I knew I’d love since @BehindThe_Pages are really good creators.  It’s  A Court Of Mist And Fury bookmark. It’s good quality paper/card stock/whatever. I know they have these bookmarks (I’ve seen them on there before) but they aren’t there right now, but you can get A Court of Thorns and Roses ones HERE.

Then we have a piece or ‘artwork’ to be honest this isn’t what I would expect to find in a Book Box.. While it obviously fits with the theme, the product itself just doesn’t fit…  I don’t know.. It just seems a little silly or cheap..

Second to last we have this A Court Of Mist And Fury ‘Book Plate’ by @BehindThe_Pages.  While I love the company who designed and made this, it seems a bit boring overall.  Just the same design with the book title in the middle.  Also other than putting it on my door, I’m not sure what purpose it has, much like the Belle print. This was specifically made for this book box.

And lastly the book…

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas.  This is the second installment in the A Court Of Thorns and Roses trilogy which is a YA/N High Fantasy series, by the author of the Throne of Glass series. While it was the obvious choice for the month and theme, having a sequel in a book box seems a bit stupid. I see two main issues with this; A) you already own this book (and got it the second it came out) and therefore have already read it and B) you haven’t read the first book yet. I have these two issues as I own it already, have read it, and the only other friend I have that would be interested has both ACOTAR and ACOMAF so if I was to give it away I would feel bad since it’s the sequel..

A thrilling, seductive new series from New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas, blending Beauty and the Beast with faerie lore.

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it… or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

Final Thoughts:

As I said with the last months box, the book was predictable within the theme.  Whether this company wanted it to be that way or not I don’t know.  There were four items I felt were well curated for this box, but basically everything else, while sticking with the theme, felt out of place and useless. For the most part the rest of my problems have been mentioned, whether in this review or the previous one.  I won’t be ordering from this company again.  It’s not economically a good idea when I haven’t been impressed thus far with the product itself.  I have cancelled my subscription this time.  I’ve triple checked.  So there will only be one more review for this company coming, which I’m sure won’t be a great review partially because I’ve been unimpressed with the service so far and also because I don’t like Game of Thrones.  Sorry to have to write such a ‘poor’ review.  But I literally only have a ‘use’ for four/five of the nine items included.  Anyway, I’m still glad I got THIS box, since it’s the one I ordered, and to have the Be Our Guest candle especially. For me The Best Damn Book Box, isn’t in fact the best book box.

  1. Your review is a lot better than mine would be. This was my first box from them and I received it (May box) on June 20th. Also, I can’t fathom using a sequel book…who does that? I know the series is popular, but I had no interest in reading it, plus I’m sure a lot of other people had already purchased it. My large poster was rolled and creased beyond use. I have heavy objects laying on it, but not much progress. That, and the other artwork, –and pieces of paper in boxes in general–just fills like useless filler, the kind of stuff I could make on my own using Google and an inkjet printer. My necklace clasp is broken and I’ve tried working with it several times. My cookie arrived so melted it looked like someone cracked an egg in a little plastic bag. My candle survived, though!
I did a 6-month subscription because I had a good discount, but I won’t be renewing; I’m already positive of that. I begged them to let skip the Game of Thrones box and they wouldn’t help me at all. Not an ounce of cooperation. 😦

    1. Yeah, not the best customer service. I try to be nice, I’m naturally a positive person. My reviews for The Best Damn Book Box are my first negative reviews. I completely agree, a lot of the paper stuff just feels like fillers… The quality isn’t exactly top notch. Like I love @BehindThe_Pages but even the place card thing for A Court of Thorns and Roses was bland and boring. And yes 100% to the thing about using a sequel book. Honestly who does that? I’ll be reviewing the Game of Thrones box as well but I’ll probably like it even less that the previous two I’ve received. Also, if you managed to eat your cookie, did it taste like dishwashing liquid or something too? Or was that just me? (sorry if my reply makes no sense it’s really late) x
