Book Subscription Box Review: The Best Damn Book Box

Like last week I wrote this blog post a while back and never got around to posting it.  I was going to post my birthday haul today however not all my books have arrived in the mail yet so I’m going to post that next week.  I haven’t read through or proofread this review/unboxing recently so hopefully there’s no mistakes.

The Best Damn Book Box: June Box ‘Game of Thrones’

Okay, so if you don’t know what a book subscription box then;

  1. Where have you been?
  2. Check out my blog post about them HERE.

I have been utterly dissatisfied with this company.  No skirting around that, I’ve said it time and time again.  So why do I keep doing reviews for a box I clearly don’t want? Because of fuck ups that’s why.  I only ever wanted the May box, but then I somehow ended up getting the April box (paid for both) then I thought I had unsubscribed to the service (and despite what I was told I never received an email informing me of billing time)  but then ended up ordering this Game of Thrones Box.  I hate Game of Thrones, like I’m sure the books are good and the TV show is obviously a bit hit.  But it’s not my favorite set of genres and there’s way too much to focus on. So I was very upset about this accidental order (I have since made sure I am unsubscribed).  But then I had to wait until August to receive this box that I didn’t even want?  I understand there were some deaths in the family and other complications, but this is a business and based on how long they’ve been running there should have been people not related to the founder who weren’t affected by the death to keep things running on schedule.  I know that sounds harsh but it’s a fact.

The Introduction/Information card is presented a lot nicer in this box compared to previous months, no pictured is that the card has a print of Daenerys with the words ‘Mother of Dragons’.  (I really didn’t want to break the seal). The font is legible which is good. Kind of annoying how many times the word ‘gorgeous’ is used though (four times is a bit unnecessary given the number of products in the box).

Next up we have this paper package thing.

Inside it was basically everything in the box other than the book.  While this is kind of cool it made it kind of less fun to unbox since I could see everything and I didn’t get to dig for treasure in the packing worms.

First things first we have this wax melt crumble (which I don’t use) by Once Upon A Wick .  I got the Jon Snow one, which smells of patchouli, bergamot, cedar wood, sandalwood and amber.  Something in it is actually giving me a headache so I’ll be removing this from my room as soon as possible.  It’s a really strong scent.  Weirdly this wasn’t included on the Information Card?

(Sorry for the bad photo) Next up is this Dragon necklace made by the company that made the box.  It’s nice but I doubt I’ll wear it anywhere.

Next I picked up this Mother of Dragons (the same print that is on the Information Card), it’s by Infinity Designs (I have no other information on them so I can’t link anything).  It’s apparently an extra added item to make up for the delay.

This is a coaster, it’s a pretty cool coaster, I actually like this.  I won’t use it as a coaster, but it’s cool.  It’s by Pigseyart on Etsy.

Surprise another item I actually like, this hand crafted bookmark of Jon Snow by Marquisdusoleil on Etsy.

More bookmarks, though these are magnetic bookmarks so kind of different.  They’re by NerdyGrlDesigns on Etsy. I have nothing against these, in fact I actually kind of like the dragon one.

Following this bookmark trend, there’s this bookmark.  It’s for the book The Bad Seed by Michael Lackey.  I’ve never heard of it and this bookmark doesn’t inspire me to want to even check it out.

Although the flip side does have a cool quote.  Still not interested in the book though.

Next up we have this book plate for Crystal Crowned, the final book in the Air Awakens series by Elise Kova.  I actually really like this, the covers for these books are awesome so I odviously like this book plate.  I haven’t read the series and I don’t think I’m planning on it, but cool nevertheless. Also it’s more like a postcard than a book plate.

Second to last we have this art print by Marquisdusoleil.  I actually kind of hate this.  I am definitely giving it to one of my friends.  I don’t like the art, I don’t know.  Just not for me.

And lastly the book…

The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye.  Disappointed about the book yet again.  I already have this book, in fact I received it in another book subscription box.  And I’m pretty sure I saw two other book subscription boxes using this same book.  Honestly the reviews for it aren’t THAT amazing?

Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill—the greatest test an enchanter will ever know. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip-smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love…or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear—the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

Final Thoughts:

I’m going into this already pissed off at having to waste money on something I didn’t want in the first place.  So if I seem a bit harsh, cut me some slack?  So odviously I’m disappointed in the book. Since I already have it.  But it’s more than that, yet again within the book subscription box world there have been multiple repeats.  Okay and as for the actual products?  The wax melts are actually giving me the worst headache and since they’ve been sitting with all the other stuff the smell is covering everything so that really sucks for me.  There was basically two things I liked a lot, two I liked okay and the rest was just blegh.  I liked the Air Awakens book plate and the John Snow bookmark.  The dragon necklace and the magnetic dragon bookmark were cool too. But yeah, odviously I’m disappointed and won’t be ordering again.  This will be my last The Best Damn Book Box review because personally it is not the best damn book box.  I don’t really know what else to say.

  1. I had horrible luck with this company! I bought a 6-month subscription, only because I had a great discount code. I got my first box (not sure which month’s, because it came about two months late), but it was the Beauty and the Beast one. The only thing right about that box was the candle. The book they sent was a SEQUEL in a series I hadn’t planned to even start. Who sends a sequel?!?! There was a melted cookie, a broken necklace, and piece of cheap artwork that was rolled up and it arrived flattened (gave it a nice accordion, rippled look). My husband scraped the cookie out of the package, I kept the pendant part of the necklace, and threw the “poster” away. I lived with it for a few weeks, and after giving it some thought, I demanded a refund for the remainder of the subscription. She strung me a long for a great deal of time, but I basically messaged her through IG almost daily. Then the refund was allegedly processed bck to my card, but she couldn’t tell me the amount. Finally, I said “it’s obviously not going back on my card, how about Paypal-ing it to me?” So she agreed and asked me HOW MUCH she owed me! After 5 weeks of corresponding, I finally got my Paypal refund. So a few weeks to stew on it and 5 weeks of messaging, and you know what? In those two months, no more boxes showed up!

    1. Yeah, I definitely haven’t had the best experience with the company. I understand there was a family emergancy at some point that had her off work but it doesn’t excuse the quality of content. That’s horrible about the refund business but I’m glad you eventually received it! Yeah there have been a lot of late boxes and they constantly do ‘one time boxes’ that put their schedule off more and more. I don’t think I’d ever recommend their company to anyone. I’m sorry you had a bad experience with them too.

  2. I recently did the audiobook of Game of Thrones and you are correct there is so much to try and keep up with. I’m sure I didn’t. The stuff from Marquisdusoleil is really pretty. She is very talented. The magnetic bookmarks are cool too. I’m sorry the experience with this one didn’t get better with time for you.
