Bookmas Day 5: Book Haul #11

If you read my Birthday Haul you’ll know I had an order of books that hadn’t arrived.  I was extremely worried and had even contacted The Book Depository to find out if they knew what had happened.  Thankfully the box arrived today and I’m so excited to share with you what I bought!

by Tahereh Mafi

Middle Grade/YA Fantasy Adventure

When this book was released everyone was talking about it.  I’ve mostly heard wonderful things about Furthermore and thought it was about time I got myself a copy of this beautiful book.  I mean just look at that cover!

A captivating and colorful adventure that reads like a modern day fairy tale, from the bestselling author of the Shatter Me series.

Inspired by her childhood love of books like The Secret Gardenand The Chronicles of Narnia, bestselling author Tahereh Mafi crafts a spellbinding new world where color is currency, adventure is inevitable, and friendship is found in the most unexpected places.

There are only three things that matter to twelve-year-old Alice Alexis Queensmeadow: Mother, who wouldn’t miss her; magic and color, which seem to elude her; and Father, who always loved her. The day Father disappears from Ferenwood he takes nothing but a ruler with him. But it’s been almost three years since then, and Alice is determined to find him. She loves her father even more than she loves adventure, and she’s about to embark on one to find the other.

But bringing Father home is no small matter. In order to find him she’ll have to travel through the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, where down can be up, paper is alive, and left can be both right and very, very wrong. It will take all of Alice’s wits (and every limb she’s got) to find Father and return home to Ferenwood in one piece. On her quest to find Father, Alice must first find herself—and hold fast to the magic of love in the face of loss.

Stalking Jack the Ripper

by Kerri Maniscalco

Young Adult Historical Mystery/Horror

Again a book that was getting  lot of hype, I just think this sounds like an incredible read and wanted to join the bandwagon.

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord’s daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father’s wishes and society’s expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle’s laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

The back blurb on the book actually says something that really hooked me and made me want to pick it up then and there.

He murdered women in cold blood.
He terrorized an entire city.
He taunted those of us who hunted him down.

But despite all these horrors,
in the end, I could not deny it….

I was the girl who loved THE RIPPER.

See, gripping isn’t it?

Precious Stone Trilogy: Sapphire Blue

by Kerstin Gier

Young Adult Historical Sci-Fi Romance

I read this series a while ago and I own the first book, Ruby Red, this order was kind of like ordering all the books I wanted but didn’t need.  Books I had been meaning to buy for a while.  Plus the covers for this series are gorgeous!

Gwyneth Shepherd’s sophisticated, beautiful cousin Charlotte has been prepared her entire life for traveling through time. But unexpectedly, it is Gwyneth, who in the middle of class takes a sudden spin to a different era!

Gwyneth must now unearth the mystery of why her mother would lie about her birth date to ward off suspicion about her ability, brush up on her history, and work with Gideon–the time traveler from a similarly gifted family that passes the gene through its male line, and whose presence becomes, in time, less insufferable and more essential. Together, Gwyneth and Gideon journey through time to discover who, in the 18th century and in contemporary London, they can trust.

The Lunar Chronicles: Scarlet

by Marissa Meyer

Young Adult Sci-Fi Romance Retelling

Sticking with the ‘picking up sequels’ trend I decided to get Scarlet.  I’ve been wanting to finish the series ever since I read (and loved) Cinder earlier in the year but I just haven’t gotten around to it. I’m glad I got it though because the second I held it I wanted to start reading (but I think I need to re-read Cinder. Maybe?).

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl.

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

Heroes Of Olympus: The Lost Hero

by Rick Riordan

Middle Grade/YA Mythology Adventure Fantasy

I’ve owned the paperback edition to three of the Heroes of Olympus books for so long and hardcovers for the other two.  So I decided to fix that.

Jason has a problem.
He doesn’t remember anything before waking up in a bus full of kids on a field trip. Apparently he has a girlfriend named Piper, and a best friend named Leo. They’re all students at a boarding school for “bad kids.” What did Jason do to end up here? And where is here, exactly?

Piper has a secret.
Her father has been missing for three days, ever since she had that terrifying nightmare about his being in trouble. Piper doesn’t understand her dream, or why her boyfriend suddenly doesn’t recognize her. When a freak storm hits during the school trip, unleashing strange creatures and whisking her, Jason, and Leo away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood, she has a feeling she’s going to find out.

Leo has a way with tools.
When he sees his cabin at Camp Half-Blood, filled with power tools and machine parts, he feels right at home. But there’s weird stuff, too—like the curse everyone keeps talking about, and some camper who;s gone missing. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist that each of them—including Leo—is related to a god. Does this have anything to do with Jason’s amnesia, or the fact that Leo keeps seeing ghosts?

But Camille is determined to have a life free from his strings. Out on her own, she’s made mistakes, including one that found her clawing her way back after a stint in rehab and plenty of bad press. Caught between resentment and fear, Camille prepares herself for the measures her father will take to protect her. But nothing could prepare her for the ex-SAS sniper who crashes into her life.

Jake Sharp resides in his own personal hell. He was distracted from duty once before, and the consequences were devastating–both personally and professionally. He vowed never to let that happen again. Accepting the job of bodyguard to Camille Logan isn’t the kind of distraction from his demons he should take. Women and Jake don’t mix well, yet protecting the heiress seems the lesser of two evils. But Jake soon discovers that she isn’t the woman she’s perceived to be. She’s warm, compassionate, her presence settling, and his duty to protect her soon goes deeper than a well-paid job, no matter how hard he fights it. He needs absolution. He comes to need Camille.
