book haul

Book Haul #12

Okay so I haven’t done a haul in a long time; I kind of hate writing them lately which sucks because they’re my favorite posts to read and videos to watch.  I just get so exhausted editing the pictures and doing the links so that’s unfortunate.  BUT I really want to have on record what books I’ve bought so I’m persevering with this collective haul.  I wish I had video editing skills so I could just film this kind of thing but oh well.

by Jus Accardo

Young Adult Science Fiction Romance

I saw this in my local bookstore and decided to pick it up. I’ve never seen or heard of it before but I thought I might give it a go.

Nobody said being the daughter of an army general was easy. But when her dad sends a teenage subordinate to babysit her while he’s away… That’s taking it a step too far.

Cade, as beautiful as he is deadly, watches Kori with more than just interest. He looks at her like he knows her very soul. And when he saves her from a seemingly random attack, well, that’s when things get weird.

Turns out, Kori’s dad isn’t just an army general—he’s the head of a secret government project that has invented a way to travel between parallel dimensions. Dimensions where there are infinite Koris, infinite Cades…and apparently, on every other Earth, they’re madly in love.

Falling for a soldier is the last thing on Kori’s mind. Especially when she finds herself in a deadly crossfire, and someone from another Earth is hell-bent on revenge…

Poison Study

by Maria V. Snyder

Young Adult Paranormal Fantasy Romance

I think I had actually skim read this once before, but back in December I had to wait around for HOURS in town for a now very unreliable friend to show up.  I had no plans on buying any books, I was just in the bookstore to stay out of the rain and wait for my friend and his partner (who ended up being 2.5 hours late after already putting the time back a bit) but I got bored of browsing (it’s a small bookshop) picked a book and started reading.  By the time I decided to head to the restaurant we had planned on meeting at I had already read 150 pages of this 300 or so page book.  So odviously I bought it.  By the time they arrived I had read a furthur 25 pages. I finished this book and skim read the rest of the series because I’m impatient and wanted to know how it ended.

Choose: A quick death…Or slow poison…

I actually already own this book but it was so cheap and in excellent condition I thought why not?

Young Adult Fantasy Romance

I had seen a little about this before picking it up, but it was at my bookstore and I’m in the biggest reading funk and it caught my interest so I bought it hoping it would crush that pesky slump.  It’s one of those books that’s in two parts, I had no problem getting into Part One, but the second Part Two began I just couldn’t do it.  It lost my interest.  I’m hoping to finish this by the end of the month though! Because I really was enjoying it and I’m supremelly pissy that it lost my interest because of this slump.

UPDATE: I completed it on the 8th of February.

Seventeen-year-old Ruby is a fireblood who must hide her powers of heat and flame from the cruel frostblood ruling class that wants to destroy all that are left of her kind. So when her mother is killed for protecting her and rebel frostbloods demand her help to kill their rampaging king, she agrees. But Ruby’s powers are unpredictable, and she’s not sure she’s willing to let the rebels and an infuriating (yet irresistible) young man called Arcus use her as their weapon.

All she wants is revenge, but before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to take part in the king’s tournaments that pit fireblood prisoners against frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her and from the icy young man she has come to love.

Fast-paced and compelling, Frostblood is the first in a page-turning new young adult three-book series about a world where flame and ice are mortal enemies—but together create a power that could change everything.

Leo has a way with tools.

City of Bones

by Cassandra Clare

Young Adult Paranormal Urban Fantasy Romance

So while I was on Barnes and Noble I noticed this bad boy.  An exclusive collector’s edition of City of Bones, hardcover, with the new cover!  I had to get it.  It has so much exclusive bonus content inside and I’ve been meaning to start collecting these books now that there are covers I really adore out!

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know…

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare’s ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

The Book Depository: Paperback

by Dan Wells

Book Three in the Partials Sequence

YA Sci-Fi Dystopian Adventure Romance

I haven’t read the first book in this series, I don’t own the first book in this series.  I found the hardcover in an op shop for like four dollars soo…. I got it.

Humanity is all but extinguished after a war with Partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island. But sixteen-year-old Kira is determined to find a solution. As she tries desperately to save what is left of her race, she discovers that that the survival of both humans and Partials rests in her attempts to answer questions about the war’s origin that she never knew to ask.

Playing on our curiosity of and fascination with the complete collapse of civilization, Partials is, at its heart, a story of survival, one that explores the individual narratives and complex relationships of those left behind, both humans and Partials alike—and of the way in which the concept of what is right and wrong in this world is greatly dependent on one’s own point of view.

Supports the Common Core State Standards.

Rusty Nailed

by Alice Clayton

Book Two in the Cocktail series.

Adult Contemporary Humour Chick Lit Romance

The first night after Caroline moves into her fantastic new San Francisco apartment, she realizes she’s gaining an intimate knowledge of her new neighbor’s nocturnal adventures. Thanks to paper-thin walls and the guy’s athletic prowess, she can hear not just his bed banging against the wall but the ecstatic response of what seems (as loud night after loud night goes by) like an endless parade of women. And since Caroline is currently on a self-imposed dating hiatus, and her neighbor is clearly lethally attractive to women, she finds her fantasies keep her awake even longer than the noise. So when the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline, clad in sexual frustration and a pink baby-doll nightie, confronts Simon Parker, her heard-but-never-seen neighbor. The tension between them is as thick as the walls are thin, and the results just as mixed. Suddenly, Caroline is finding she may have discovered a whole new definition of neighborly…

In a delicious mix of silly and steamy, Alice Clayton dishes out a hot and hilarious tale of exasperation at first sight…

A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning

by Lemony Snicket

Middle Grade Fantasy

I haven’t read this series, I want to have read this series, I bought the first book.

Dear Reader,

I’m sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket

A Monster Calls

by Patrick Ness

Young Adult Fantasy Horror

Okay, so I was kind of interested in picking this one up but I kept putting it off because I don’t like horror and everyone says this books is heart wrenching HOWEVER when I saw an ARC of it at a second hand shop I had to grab it.  Had to.

The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.

But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming…

This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth.
