Book Subscription Box Review: Illumicrate ‘Starfall Edition’

Illumicrate: Starfall Edition

The Illumicrate Starfall Edition box is the second of I think 6 boxes for A Court of Frost and Starlight that I have ordered – and even though I haven’t seen the others I think this one might be my favourite! There was just so much in here!  Now I will preface this by saying that my box was severely damaged in transit, when it was delivered you could literally tip the box upside down and everything would have fallen out, and by some miracle only one item was missing.  ONE ITEM out of thirteen.  And yes, you heard that right, thirteen items were included in this box (odviously I can only show twelve).  I did contact the support team and I will have a replacement item shipped in the near future.  Anyway I’ll preface this with the same warning I put in my unboxing and review of The YA Chronicles ‘Frost and Starlight’ box: Spoiler warning in case anyone hasn’t read beyond A Court of Thorns and Roses (I include the synopsis for ACOFAS and it has spoiler from A Court of Wings and Ruin)! And in case anyone didn’t know, A Court of Frost and Starlight is a novella bridging the first trilogy to the spin-off set in this world – which if you’re read the bonus chapter/sneak peek at the end of ACOFAS you’ll know who that follows and I am so excited to read more about these characters.  It is not a full length novel, more like a snippet into their day to day lives now the war is over.  It isn’t supposed to have a full plot and some of the reviews I’ve seen have said that it feels almost like the story itself is fan-fiction.

And now lets get started on the ‘unboxing’ and review!  I am skipping my usual first step, which is to talk about the box itself, since the box was too damaged to photograph well and really the only design it had was a small (compared to the box) sticker saying ‘Starfall Edition’ (as shown below on the Introduction/Spoiler card).  Also the products are not shown in order that I pulled them out since I had to take everything out to check what, if anything, was missing – they’re in the order that was shown on the Intro/Spoiler card.

First up we have this beautifully designed book sleeve featuring the map of Prythian with artwork for each Court represented.  On the back is some constellations – I’m not sure if they’re of any importance but they look really cool!  This was designed and created by Sparrow + Wolf.  I really love this, it’s the most beautiful book sleeve I’ve ever seen and I’m so happy I have it and I can’t wait to start using it!

Next we have this ‘To the stars that listen, and the dreams that are answered‘ tote designed and created by Ink and Wonder – which is a creator that I adore!  I do think there’s a bit too much rainbow going on for my personal liking but I still think this is a beautifully designed tote and I do plan on using it.

Continuing the trend of creators I know and love, we have this mug with a design by the one and only Charlie Bowater.  Charlie has created some of the most iconic ACOTAR artwork, she did all the artwork for the colouring book and has helped design aspects of the A Court of Wings and Ruin and A Court of Frost and Starlight covers (to my knowledge, correct me if I’m wrong).  I love her art style and how she draws these characters and I’m so happy to have this little mug – even if it’ll probably just be ornamental.

Up next we have this darling Illyrian wingspan necklace created by Mirror Image Accessories.  Like all the other items in this box, I love this.  I think it’s such a fun and unique idea and I personally think it’s really wearable – you could even wear it to Batman related things since the wings kind of look like bat’s wings.  So multi-wearable! Also it’ll be really cute in photos.

Following on with the wearable items (there’s three in total in this box) we have this summer scarf with each of the courts represented.  I think this is really cool, I personally wouldn’t wear it and I may even end up putting it in a giveaway if I don’t end up using it as a photo prop, but it’s a really fun way of incorporating all the courts into this box.  Pattern designed by Evannave.

Next up we have these ‘tarot’ cards.  I don’t like tarot cards and so I’m calling these character cards.  They’re awesome, I love the art style and I think they photograph really well and will be awesome props (so many props, and I still have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to bookstagram).  These were designed by Monolime, who, if you’ve seen the special editions of ACOFAS you’ll know, designed the artwork on the inside covers of ACOFAS.

Up next we have this Starfall two-toned candle by Two Candle Thieves (which is an awesome shop name!).  It’s Black Tea, Musk Rose and Dark Fruits scented, though I couldn’t really smell anything outstanding.  I’ll probably light it to see if I have an allergic reaction and if I do I’ll give it to a friend.

Up next we have this Stars Eternal and Night Triumphant enamel pin designed by Fable & Black.  I love this pin set, I think it might be my favourite pin set of all time I think it’s beautiful and a great idea!  One day when I have a partner I could pin the Night Triumphant on their bag or something and I could have the Stars Eternal.  Or I could just keep both and never use them because I’m scared to lose them.  Like I do with most of my special pins and stickers.

Next we have this Starfall deck of cards designed by Keeper of the Suns.  The Ace, Joker, Queen and King of each set feature characters and items from the series.  I didn’t get amazing photos of them, but I’ll still include them below so you get what I mean.  Plus I think the art is really cute!

Next up we have this stunning artwork of Rhys and Feyre during Starfall.  Illustrated by Kat Adara.  I love how we can see the mountain and three stars in this piece!

The final wearable item in this box is possibly my favourite.  It’s these socks inspired by Feyre’s tattoo, exclusively designed by Illumicrate!  I work so I can’t do the whole Feyre’s tattoos on my hands for photos or anything; but this way I can still rep of of my favourite series’ while being subtle and dressed appropriately for work,  Also they’ll keep my toes warm in the cold Tasmanian weather.

And a drum roll for the book….

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas.  I already read and loved it!  I rated it 5 stars! I love the design of this cover, Feyre’s dress, the border, the three stars.  It’s simply stunning! Plus it’s been hand-stamped with an exclusive ink stamp (poor quality photo alert).

The Winter Solstice. In a week. I was still new enough to being High Lady that I had no idea what my formal role was to be. If we’d have a High Priestess do some odious ceremony, as lanthe had done the year before. A year. Gods, nearly a year since Rhys had called in his bargain, desperate to get me away from the poison of the Spring Court to save me from my despair. Had he been only a minute later, the Mother knew what would have happened. Where I’d now be. Snow swirled and eddied in the garden, catching in the brown fibers of the burlap covering the shrubs My mate who had worked so hard and so selflessly, all without hope that I would ever be with him We had both fought for that love, bled for it. Rhys had died for it.

In addition to the book Illumicrate were able to include two special bonus’!

A signed letter by Sarah J. Maas thanking the readers of the series!

And Bloomsbury provided this exclusive metal bookmark!

Final Thoughts:

I LOVED this box.  And while I was and am disappointed that my box was damaged and an item lost, that’s of no fault of the company’s.  There was so much in this box and it was all so beautifully designed and well made.  Literally everything feels like it’s good quality, everything.  So much work has obliviously gone into this box and it shows.  My favourite items, other than the book and that letter, are probably the book sleeve and the socks.  I also love the character cards and the deck of cards, but they definitely come in a second to that book sleeve and the socks.  Socks which I’ve already worn twice!  I’m so glad I decided to order this box, I was hesitant due to the price originally but I caved and I’ve never been so glad to be a compulsive buyer.

When I receive the missing lipbalm I’ll add it into this post for suture readers.
