book haul

Book Haul #17

Okay, I should have done a haul a long time ago because now I have I’m backed up and there are so many books it’s a little overwhelming…  To make things easier and less stressful for me I’m going to try and do two separate hauls, the first will cover Pre-Orders and Incentives and other Books. The second haul will cover Swag (bookmarks mostly) and Second Hand/Cheap books.  If I never end up posting the second half – forgive me.  I’m going to try and keep this quick and easy, I won’t be putting blurbs for some of these books, so let’s just get into this.
I am an affiliate for the Book Depository so in full disclosure, the links to purchase the books in this post may give me a small commission.

Pre-Order & Incentives

A Court of Frost and Starlight

by Sarah J. Maas

Book 3.1 in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series.

New Adult Fantasy Romance Novella

Ordering this is pretty self-explanatory.  I loved A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Court of Mist and Fury – and while I didn’t finish A Court of Wings and Ruin I did skim read it so I knew what was going on.  And no I don’t think I’ll be reading A Court of Wings and Ruin anytime soon since it keeps putting me into a reading slump.  The pre-order for this was a Night Court enamel pin and because I ordered the Illumicrate Starfall box, which counted as a pre-order, I was able to submit two receipts and so I have two pins!

I ended up with two editions of this (with a third in the mail) and I’m not even mad since I read and loved it!  I pre-ordered so I received a PDF short prologue story and five character cards (which I love!), and I also received a copy of this awesome book in my Fairyloot ‘Save the Kingdom’ box which is an exclusive edition with sprayed pages and a signed book plate!

They call her Traitor Kate. It’s a title Kate Brighton inherited from her father after he tried to assassinate the high king years ago. Now Kate lives as an outcast, clinging to the fringes of society as a member of the Relay, the imperial courier service. Only those most skilled in riding and bow hunting ride for the Relay; and only the fastest survive, for when dark falls, the nightdrakes—deadly flightless dragons—come out to hunt. Fortunately, Kate has a secret edge: she is a wilder, born with magic that allows her to influence the minds of animals. But it’s this magic that she needs to keep hidden, as being a wilder is forbidden, punishable by death or exile. And it’s this magic that leads her to a caravan massacred by nightdrakes in broad daylight—the only survivor her childhood friend, her first love, the boy she swore to forget, the boy who broke her heart.

The high king’s second son, Corwin Tormane, never asked to lead. Even as he waits for the uror—the once-in-a-generation ritual to decide which of the king’s children will succeed him—he knows it’s always been his brother who will assume the throne. And that’s fine by him. He’d rather spend his days away from the palace, away from the sight of his father, broken with sickness from the attempt on his life. But the peacekeeping tour Corwin is on has given him too much time to reflect upon the night he saved his father’s life—the night he condemned the would-be killer to death and lost the girl he loved. Which is why he takes it on himself to investigate rumors of unrest in one of the remote city-states, only for his caravan to be attacked—and for him to be saved by Kate.

With their paths once more entangled, Kate and Corwin have to put the past behind them. The threat of drakes who attack in the daylight is only the beginning of a darker menace stirring in the kingdom—one whose origins have dire implications for Kate’s father’s attack upon the king and will thrust them into the middle of a brewing civil war in the kingdom of Rime.

Sky in the Deep

by Adrienne Young

Young Adult Historical Fantasy

Currently Reading

I love history, not modern history, but Ancient History and Middle Ages periods.  And all too often their influence in YA Fantasy is just that, influence.  Rarely do we get books actually set in this period (on a similar note if you love Ancient Rome check out Blood and Sand by C.V Wyk and if you like the Biblical era [though not set in a real world, very well researched and set in a similar world and time] check out Prophet by R.J LarsonREVIEW HERE). So a book about actual vikings, that is well researched and YA?  I was all in, I pre-ordered before I knew there would be a pre-order incentive and I was counting down the days til it’s release – and I know I haven’t finished it just yet but I just haven’t been in a historical mood.  But I’m getting through it and loving it.  This is also another book which I ended up with multiple copies, OwlCrate included in in their ‘Fight Like a Girl’ box and it’s again a special edition and signed!

Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield — her brother, fighting with the enemy — the brother she watched die five years ago.

Faced with her brother’s betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family.

She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.

I ordered this edition because it included bonus chapters from Thomas’ POV.  So odviously I needed it.

Against her stern father’s wishes and society’s expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle’s laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

New Adult Contemporary Romance

Nicholas Arthur Frederick Edward Pembrook, Crowned Prince of Wessco, aka His Royal Hotness, is wickedly charming, devastatingly handsome, and unabashedly arrogant; hard not to be when people are constantly bowing down to you.

Then, one snowy night in Manhattan, the prince meets a dark haired beauty who doesn’t bow down. Instead, she throws a pie in his face.

Nicholas wants to find out if she tastes as good as her pie, and this heir apparent is used to getting what he wants.

Dating a prince isn’t what waitress Olivia Hammond ever imagined it would be.

There’s a disapproving queen, a wildly inappropriate spare heir, relentless paparazzi, and brutal public scrutiny. While they’ve traded in horse drawn carriages for Rolls Royces, and haven’t chopped anyone’s head off lately, the royals are far from accepting of this commoner.

But to Olivia, Nicholas is worth it.

Nicholas grew up with the whole world watching, and now Marriage Watch is in full force. In the end, Nicholas has to decide who he is and, more importantly, who he wants to be: a King… or the man who gets to love Olivia forever.

Reign the Earth

by A.C Gaughen

Book one in The Elementae series.

Young Adult Fantasy

I saw this in my local Kmart and had to pick it up, A.C Gaughen wrote the Scarlet trilogy and I loved that and I did really like the blurb for this one.

Shalia is a proud daughter of the desert, but after years of devastating war with the adjoining kingdom, her people are desperate for peace. Willing to trade her freedom to ensure the safety of her family, Shalia becomes Queen of the Bonelands.

But she soon learns that her husband, Calix, is motivated only by his desire to exterminate the Elementae—mystical people who can control earth, wind, air, and fire. Even more unsettling are Shalia’s feelings for her husband’s brother, which unleash a power over the earth she never knew she possessed—a power that could get her killed. As rumors of a rebellion against Calix spread, Shalia must choose between the last chance for peace and her own future as an Elementae.
