Book Tag: Mid-Year Book Freak Out

I needed a break from book subscription box reviews and book hauls – I haven’t posted anything else in a really long time and I just need to do a fun tag.  So here we are, this tag was created by IsThatChami and ElyJayne.  I’m also skipping the last question as I’m not involved with the book community enough to have a favourite book community member.  Not that I don’t want to be; but I have ADHD and keeping track of my real life friends is hard enough.

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2018.

23395680

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – I had put off reading it for so long, I just kept getting distracted.  But when I finally got into it, I devoured it, it was incredible!

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2018.

Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco.  I finally read Stalking Jack the Ripper this year and while I rated it four stars I rated Hunting Prince Dracula five stars!  I loved these two books and can’t wait to read Escaping from Houdini when it comes out later this year!

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

35145741

Hinder by Kristin Ping; this is a release I forgot about, but looking through my 2018 releases shelf on Goodreads I found it and was reminded about how excited I was for its release.  When I originally discovered it there was no pre-order links available yet, but it’s been released now and I’ve just ordered it and am awaiting it’s arrival.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

I have a few sequels that I’m excited for but what I’m really anticipating is any Emma Hart releases; so far I know we have Four Day FlingHot Mess and Best Served Cold coming out this year, but there could be more! And Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco, as I said above, I finally read and loved Stalking Jack the Ripper and Hunting Prince Dracula this year and I’m incredibly excited about the third book.

5. Biggest disappointment.

Heart on Fire by Amanda Bouchet.  I had read and loved A Promise of Fire and Breath of Fire, in fact in anticipation of Heart on Fire’s release I think I re-read them multiple times.  But when I finally read it, it just wasn’t what I was hoping it would be, certain parts felt like they were written by a different author and the final big battle wasn’t as climatic as it had been built up to be.  I just wasn’t happy with the ending.

6. Biggest surprise.

Onyx & Ivory by Mindee Arnett- I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did.  I had it on my TBR and had pre-ordered it, but I didn’t think that I’d get to it any time soon.  I picked it up and devoured it in a few hours, rated it five stars, and cannot wait for the sequel!  I have two special editions of it (Fairyloot and Litjoy) so I’m very glad that I did love it so much!

7. Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

It’s between C.V Wyk and Adrienne Young.  I love the books I read by them, the writing, the history elements, I look forward to seeing what else they write in the future.

8. Newest fictional crush.

Thomas Cresswell (from Stalking Jack the Ripper) or Fiske (from Sky in the Deep).  I love Thomas, I think he’s so endearing.  And Fiske really grew on me, I wouldn’t mind having a Fiske in my life.

9. Newest favourite character.

Audrey Rose Wadsworth (from Stalking Jack the Ripper).  She’s headstrong, determined, witty (or is it just the banter between her and Cresswell?) and I just really like how forward-thinking she is.

10. Book that made you cry.

30975382

Blood and Sand by C.V Wyk.  Pompeii, need I say more.

11. Book that made you happy.

Royals by Rachel Hawkins.  It was such a fluffy sweet romance that was a perfect read in the wake of the royal wedding.

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received).

I’ve bought a lot of books that look good or are well designed, but I’m not sure whether beautiful is how I would describe them, more like ‘incredible artwork’ or ‘intricately detailed’.  Maybe Hunting Prince Dracula? The cover is striking.

13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

Oh this will be a long one; Gemina and Obsidio, The Case for Jamie, Daughter of the Siren Queen, Umbertouched, Cadaver & Queen, Hinder, A Touch of Gold, Markswoman, Escaping from Houdini, Unearthed, My Plain Jane, The Traitor’s Ruin, Dance of Thieves, Four Day Fling, Best Served Cold, Hot Mess, Royally Yours, Unlocked, Kiss of the Royal, Heart of Thorns, The Darkest Star, and probably many more that I’ve forgotten or don’t know about yet..

I would love to see your responses to this book tag, so I tag YOU!
