wrap up

Wrap Up: June 2018

I’ve bumped my Goodreads reading goal back down all the way to 100.  There’s less pressure now, and I want to focus on reading books that I will love and actually remembering what they were about rather than just reading as much as I can.

Onyx and Ivory (#1 Rime Chronicles) by Mindee Arnett – ★★★★★ – Young Adult Fantasy

I loved this book, I read it over a longer period than normal (a crashed laptop and a requirement of recovering whatever files I could took precedence) but I think it deserves a re-read for a full review.  My only issue (at this moment) is I just didn’t like reading a fantasy novel where a character had a normal name.  It bugged me.  Which I am aware is weird, but it’s my honest opinion.  I pre-ordered it and entered my receipt in for the pre-order incentive so I have the short story Trial by Two to read, but I know I’ll enjoy it just as much as I enjoyed Onyx and Ivory and I look forward to reading the sequel.

The Fix (#1 The Carolina Connections) by Sylvie Stewart – ★★★ – Contemporary Humour Romance

Uncharted (#1 Uncharted) by Julie Johnson – ★★★★ – New Adult Contemporary Romance

I loved this, I did skim read a lot of it, I just didn’t go into it thinking it would be good, but it was and I plan on re-reading it to get the full experience.

The Wild Heir by Karina Halle – ★★★★ – New Adult Contemporary Romance

This may be a spoiler but I loved reading a book where a character in a high ranking position has, not only a mental disability, but one that isn’t brought up often – and that I share.  I found myself relating to some of Magnus’ behaviors and it was the first time I think I’ve ever related more to the male protagonist than the female.

The Biker’s Virgin by Claire Adams – ★★★ – Adult Contemporary Romance

Poison Study (#1 Study) by Maria V. Snyder – ★★★★ – Young Adult Fantasy Romance

Re-read. I love this series and have only ever skim read the rest of the series, I need to fully read it and write up a review because even from just skimming it I know I love the characters and world and need to show it the appreciation it deserves.  I know why I skim read the series as well – at the time of my original read, and even now, I’m more interested in Yelena and Valek being together than the actual story line.

Assassin Study (#1.5 Study) by Maria V. Snyder – ★★ – Young Adult Fantasy Romance

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young – ★★★★★ – Young Adult Historical Fantasy

This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year and I loved the story and characters – I wasn’t as focused while reading it so I think I could benefit from a re-read, and I’d love to write a review for it so I’ll probably re-read this before the year is through.  The second read through will tell me if it was the writing style that caused me to not be as invested, or if it was because of outside circumstances.

City of Bastards (#2 Royal Bastards) by Andrew Shvarts – ★★★ – Young Adult Fantasy

** spoiler alert ** Skim read; will re-read in full over the next few days. I had a bad day, was impatient and my head was fuzzy – I blame my Ritalin, a busy day and lack of food for that – so despite needing to read, I couldn’t fall into it as I normally would. But I like where the story has gone, I look forward to reading over the parts I missed in my skim read – which took 3 hours so it wasn’t too skimmed.
