Michael Cohen is one of America’s greatest whiskey makers.
He has been called “America’s favorite bartender,” “America ‘s favorite drinker,” and “Americas greatest whisperer.”
But now, in “Midnight Sunshine,” Cohen’s memoir, he reveals how he made the perfect bourbon cocktail for his legendary bartender, Anthony Bourdain.
The book details the time Cohen spent trying to recreate the whiskey and bourbon mix he used to create his cocktail at the legendary NYC bar La Sazerac.
“I had been drinking bourbon for nearly a decade,” Cohen wrote.
“I was an avid bourbon fan and I wanted to know how it all came together.
What if I put some of my old bourbon in a bourbon barrel?
I had no idea what a bourbon was, but I knew I wanted something sweet and savory.”
But instead of trying to replicate the recipe, Cohen used a cocktail recipe he had found online and created something even better.
Cohen says he was inspired by the “trend of a new cocktail that was inspired from online cocktail recipes.
So I decided to recreate it myself.”
After a few drinks at the bar, Cohen and Bourdain settled on an all-grain, bourbon-infused cocktail that is named Midnight Sun.
The drink is made with gin, bitters, and whiskey, and it’s served with fresh-squeezed lemon juice.
Cohen calls it “one of the most delicious drinks I’ve ever had.”
“I love bourbon, but what if you wanted something even more sweet?”
Cohen said in the book.
“What if you made a cocktail that didn’t taste like bourbon but tasted like a cocktail made with a new kind of gin that I had discovered online?”
Midnight sunset is the perfect combination of bourbon and gin.
And I’m not talking about a splash of bourbon, I’m talking about the kind of bourbon that I found on the internet and made it a little bit sweeter with a bit more of an oakiness and a bit less of a rye.
And it’s also packed with lemon juice, which is another thing that I love about bourbon, and lemon juice is one reason I love whiskey, too.
And bourbon and lemon peel.
“Cohen also says that he added a splash more of the brandy to make a more complex drink.
The book was released on Sunday.
