On Tuesday night, President Donald Trump tweeted: “If Dems make it harder for the Senate to go through cloture, the Senate will go through a very rough process, with the possibility of a 51-vote majority.”
The tweet came just hours after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced his intention to push through a cloture vote that would allow the Senate not only to pass a healthcare bill but also to consider a debt ceiling increase.
“The Democrats are going to try to filibuster everything.
That’s what the American people voted for, and the American public doesn’t want to see this happening again,” Schumer told reporters at a press conference on Capitol Hill.
“I want to make sure that there’s not a delay on anything.
I want to get to a deal, so the American workers can have health care and we can pay down the national debt.
And I want the Democrats to stop filibustering everything.”
Schumer said that he wanted to do it “for the American citizens” by allowing the Senate vote on a healthcare measure before the deadline.
“If Democrats make it hard for the House to go thru cloture… the House will go to the Senate with a 51 vote majority,” Schumer said.
“But we’re going for cloture. “
If Democrats make that hard, we will pass a bill, and it will pass, but the Democrats have been obstructionist.” “

This is the second time in less than a month that Schumer has said he is willing to push the debt ceiling.
On November 15, Schumer called on the Senate and House to do “something.”
“This is what the people have voted for and the people want.
It’s time to do something.
And if we can do it, the American taxpayers can afford it,” Schumer tweeted.
“When the American voters tell us that they don’t want the Senate going through the pain of a vote, then they have the power to make a deal,” Schumer added.
In a tweet on Wednesday, Trump defended Schumer, saying, “Chuck Schumer is the Senate Democrat leader, he wants to pass the legislation, he’s willing to go to cloture with 51 votes, he just can’t get it done!”
